In the 12 years that the National Socialist Party was in power in Germany -- from January 1933 to May 1945 -- upwards of 15,000 concentration and labour camps were established in the Greater Reich and the occupied countries to incarcerate all who were deemed enemies of the state. The first was set up by Heinrich Himmler, then the Police President of Munich, just outside the city at Dachau, its very name becoming associated with death. Camps were then established in quick succession at Sachsenhausen, Buchenwald, Flossenburg, Mauthausen in Austria, Ravensbruck (exclusively for women), Neuengamme, Gross-Rosen and, later in the war, Belsen, yet it was the extermination camps, hidden away in eastern Poland, that horrified the world when their existence was revealed in 1945.

Specifically designed and built to kill people in order to carry out the Nazis 'Final Solution', the names of Auschwitz, Belzec, Chelmno, Majdanek, Sobibor and Treblinka will forever be linked with death on an industrial scale. These and many more concentration camps in Belgium, Czechoslovakia, Estonia, France, Holland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Norway, Poland, and even the United Kingdom, are included in this book, illustrated with comparison photographs which are the forte of After the Battle.

Some of the camps have been preserved but at others only a memorial stands to mark its passing. Through the dreaded camp portal marked with the euphemistic phrase 'Work gives Freedom', millions walked never to return, and our final chapter recounts the efforts undertaken by the Allies to bring those responsible to justice.

The Nazi Death Camps Then and Now Winston G Ramsey 9781870067898 Books Reviews

An amazing world war two book, compiled by obviously passionate World War II historians. Chronicles a very dark side of the German national Socialist regime. Honors the millions of victims of the national Socialist machine. Excellent photography, and detailed captions next to each photograph.
I was initially reluctant to purchase this book because of its subject matter. But, having done so, I am glad I did. My fears - for that is what the reluctance was about - that people would view reading this book...no, looking at the photographs,,,as voyeuristic or pro-Nazi, lay in my mind and nowhere else.

After the Battle is an historical franchise started in the 1970s as a quarterly magazine with the objective of showing the sites of various WW2 events with pictures taken at the time (then) and in the present (now). Over the years, the publishing team have produced specialized volumes with greater detail about certain events (D-Day, Arnhem, the Battle of Britain to name three).

This volume addresses the most sordid event in the Nazi regime, the industrialized attempts to eliminate whole races. These actions were carried out not just in Germany and Poland (though it was in these two countries that the majority of the killing occurred), but in most other occupied nations.
Following that pattern, the book moves from country to country, providing a written discussion nd visual presentation of what each camp looked like then and what now remains. For many of the sites, there is much to see. For some - notably the camp at Sobidor in Poland, attempts were made to remove all vestiges of the camp and the bodies.

In the end, the result is both horrifying and instructional. We all have to understand that, given the chance, the human race is flawed. Thus, we must constantly be prepared to avoid and/or stop such actions as lead to this book being needed.
GREAT BOOK!
If you ever wanted to know about the Death Camps, this is the book to read.
A superb book on a tragic history on Mankind in WAR!! I wonder if this side of Mankind can be averted, if ever!! I wasn't awarw of the number of 'Death Camps in upwards of 15,000 that existed between 1933 through 1945!! I can't imagine that the German people never knew of their existence in that time span? The book is very shocking especially the picture of a Grandmother with three little ones on the way to the Death House of AUSCHWITZ II (Birkenau), page 422!!!
The book should be read by people who understand such horror to Our Younger Generation who can see INJUSTICE in Capital Letters!!!!
I have been a fan of the After the Battle format since 2000. All you have to do is look at any book from the company and you will become a fan also! For any individual studying the Holocaust, this book is a must! The book covers over 40 different camps with pictures from the period and now, maps and well written text that informs and sometimes shocks. While the book is well written and easy to read, its not an easy subject to deal with. This is the only book I have ever seen that deals with so many of the Nazi camps. I am proud to add this to my collection.
