On a stormy night in September of 2007 Chris Zacharius and three other divers recovered a single engine plane from the restricted dive waters of the Silver Banks between the Dominican Republic and the Turks and Caicos Islands. It was loaded with valuables that had belonged to the dictator Rafael Trujillo. This was a valuable find for Chris and his fellow divers Mit Kruger, Gretchen Viertbauer, and Angel Dominguez. The quest for this huge fortune takes the group to the mountains of the Dominican Republic, to Haiti during a rebel war, and to a cave to rescue one of their group kidnapped by an army of drug smugglers led by Jon Jon Vieux who practiced the evil version of voodoo. After the discovery is found there is a major gun battle as several competing factions attempt to take it away from them. The story is an epic adventure that is fun, sexy, explosive, and blends historical facts into legendary fiction.

Outstanding material .. great plot .. I could not put it down once I started reading it... completed it over one weekend. I was drawn into the book ... I felt like I was one of the "supporting actors" ... I liked it so much that I ordered a couple of books for some good friends that had a trip planned to the Caribbean .. they have since returned .. read the book .... and they thought it was outstanding as well .. it turned out to be the "perfect gift". I highly recommend it ... great way to spend a few hours .. Enjoy the read .....Product details

Once Upon a Reef Chap Harper 9780615641638 Books Reviews
Dive shallow or you might not return to surface until you have finished this mesmerizing tale. This book has it all from voodoo priestess to a corrupt third world country dictator. Mr. Harper has done his homework. He has managed to intertwine facts and fiction smoothly throughout the book. Mix a lot of adventure, history, and a little spice and you have a very entertaining read. Will this be the beginning of a new Caribbean adventure series? One can only hope. We want more of Chris and Lu.
I know Chap as a fellow gardener. Who would have guessed that when he wasn't digging in the dirt, he was writing a great novel full of action, romance and suspense. I'm impressed. "Once Upon A Reef's" lead character is Chris who's kind of a cross between Indiana Jones and Steven Seagal. The action was great and I loved the suspense (Indiana). Good body count too(Seagal). This book would make a great movie. Only dilemma I see is both Harrison Ford and Seagal are too old to play Chris. Thanks Chap for provding me with an enjoyable week of evening reading. Chap left an opening for a sequel and has told me he is working on a second book with most of the story taking place in Africa. I can't wait to read it. Till then, buy this book, you won't be disappointed.
Once Upon a Reef is an action-filled treasure hunter's dream, filled with vibrant and humorous characters who have embarked upon a quest together to find one of the greatest treasures to have been lost in history's many obscure pages. The book is certainly for an adult audience, and it's quite clear that the main characters always keep plenty of time on reserve for some of risque interaction, but it also takes the reader on a thrilling adventure that is far too tempting to pass up.
What I loved about this story were the many plots and sub-plots that were uncovered, along with the main character's abilities in putting together loosely bound scraps of information to form a somewhat accurate picture of decades-old-events so they can trace the location of the treasure to its final (or at least most recent) resting place. This story reminded me just a bit of a hybrid Indiana Jones mixed with Miami Vice. There are government plots, secret police intrigues, aspiring political leaders, an angry voodoo-priest druglord, and plenty of action between these parties to keep everything more than a little interesting.
What I could have done without was the fact that the main characters seemed to view everything through a hyper-sexual lense, which made it a little difficult to gloss over the adult areas and just read the story progression. I love a good adventure, but I typically try to steer clear of this kind of content. When the theme is this pervasive, however, it's simply unavoidable. That being said, the book was very well written, the plot was good, and the story moved along fairly well, so my single complaint doesn't stand up well against the many good things that this one has going for it.
I'm glad for having read Once Upon a Reef, and I happily give the book a 4 star rating with high hopes for more good reads to come from Chap Harper.
Thanks for the great read!

I thought it was a really interesting book. Story was almost believable and I could really relate to the diving issues. Must have required a lot of research. Found it hard to put down. Good job classmate. Like to see another one.
Chappy did a fantastic job on this book. Once you start reading the book you don't want to put it down until you have finished it, I hope they will make a movie from the book.
